On Thursday morning, President Donald Trump tweeted this: “The Caravan is largely broken up thanks to the strong immigration laws of Mexico and their willingness to use them so as not to cause a giant scene at our Border. Because of the Trump Administrations actions, Border crossings are at a still UNACCEPTABLE 46 year low. Stop drugs!”
He was referencing a group of largely central Americans making their way across Mexico, some with the intent of seeking asylum in the United States. But, Trump’s claim that the caravan is breaking up as a result of any sort of actions by the Mexican government suggests that he doesn’t understand what the caravan actually is – and what they hope to accomplish.
Cillizza: What is the status of the caravan currently?
Santiago: The caravan is heading to the state of Puebla in Mexico. Puebla is about two hours south of Mexico City, and about seven hours northwest of where the caravan has been camped out for days in Oaxaca.
