Members of the Sellers family cuddle on the couch before school one morning in 2006. Tracy Sellers, left, is using sign language to communicate with her two daughters, Kacey and Lacey. Photographer Matt Eich got to know the family -- which also includes two boys -- while working on a college project at Ohio University. Eich photographed the family over a 10-year span. The images are part of his recently published book "Carry Me Ohio."
Tracy Sellers watches her kids play with neighbors in the front yard of their home in Chauncey, Ohio, in 2007. Chauncey's coal-mining corporations fled, leaving the community impoverished and "brokenhearted," according to Eich.
One of the twins slips off her father's shoulders as they play in Athens, Ohio, in 2009. Eich's college assignment was to document a community through photos. He found one with tenacity, intimacy and love, even in the depths of loss and poverty.

School therapist Pattie O'Brien makes the sign for "bug" with Lacey during one-on-one-tutoring in 2006.
William Sellers, left, and one of his sisters lie on a sofa as their visiting cousin, Dominic, sleeps on their floor in Columbus, Ohio, in 2010. The family moved from Chauncey to Columbus so the twins could attend a school for deaf children.
Lacey wanders out in the middle of the street to examine the skidmark her dad left as he drove away one day. At the time, Eich said, he couldn't put his finger on what struck him about the photo. The realization came later, when the photographer had children of his own. "In the photo, there's some uncertainty to the road; you can't really see where it leads. It makes me think of the opportunities my daughters have, compared to those that the twins have."
William watches TV on the sofa in 2009. He got a painful sunburn on his shoulder while playing baseball.
