The man who hopes to build Africa’s first STEM school
Students take part in a robotics academy in Lagos, Nigeria, which was started by MIT graduate Obinna Ukwuani.
The Exposure Robotics Academy, which ran between 2012 and 2014, taught 113 boys and girls from 17 states around Nigeria how to code and build robots.
Ukwuani worked with students of the robotics program, where they learned to build and create with mentors from MIT.
"I think it was an injustice. In the U.S., if you work hard, you'll be fine in this life. So I had that moment where I knew I wanted to improve things in Nigeria," says Ukwuani, who hopes he'll soon be breaking ground on building a STEM school in Abuja.
Ukwuani believes Nigeria's biggest issue is that the country doesn't produce anything. "We import everything, and it comes back to education. We're not doing a good job," says the aspiring entrepreneur, who hopes to help change that.
