Williams gave a fiery speech at the BET Awards

Shonda Rhimes has spoken out

CNN —

Maybe you want Jesse Williams fired from “Grey’s Anatomy,” or maybe you don’t – either way, there’s a petition for you.

The fiery acceptance speech Williams gave at the BET Awards late last month has led to a call on Change.org to have him booted from the hit show.

“Jesse Williams spewed a racist, hate speech against law enforcement and white people at the BET awards,” the petition says. “If this was a white person making the same speech about an African American, they would have been fired and globally chastised, as they should be, but there has been no consequences to Williams’ actions.”

During his speech, which he gave while receiving the 2016 BET Humanitarian Award, Williams spoke extensively on race and the U.S.

“Now, what we’ve been doing is looking at the data and we know that police somehow manage to deescalate, disarm and not kill white people everyday,” he said. “So what’s going to happen is we are going to have equal rights and justice in our own country or we will restructure their function and ours.”

His remarks stirred both acclaim and ire, and there are multiple counter petitions on Change.org calling for him to be kept on the show.

“Jesse’s speech is an eloquent and passionate call to action against countless unarmed African Americans being murdered at the hands of Police across America,” one petition said. “Jesse’s speech is NOT a Hate speech.”

The petition calling for Williams to be fired referred back to “Grey’s Anatomy” history, asking, “Why was Burke’s character fired from Grey’s Anatomy after his inappropriate homophobic slur, but nothing for Jesse Williams?”

Isaiah Washington, who played Dr. Preston Burke prior to his being let go in 2007 after he used a gay slur during an argument with castmate Patrick Dempsey, posted on his Facebook page in support of a petition to keep Williams on “Grey’s.”

Fans of Williams and his character can likely rest easy, as the ultimate voice has spoken out.

“Grey’s” creator Shonda Rhimes tweeted Monday night, “Um, people? Boo don’t need a petition. #shondalandrules.”
