Pigeon Forge Police Chief: Fire from crash consumed a hillside

CNN  —

A sightseeing helicopter crashed in Tennessee on Monday, killing five people and engulfing a hillside in flames.

All five of the victims had been traveling in the chopper, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency spokesman Dean Flener said.

The crash, which happened around 3:30 p.m., sent a dark plume of smoke into the sky. Firefighters were working to battle a blaze that had spread around the crash site on a hillside in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Police Chief Jack H. Baldwin told CNN affiliate WATE.

“There isn’t much left of the helicopter,” he said.

FAA officials are heading to Pigeon Forge to investigate, Baldwin said.

Registration details about the Bell 206 sightseeing helicopter were not immediately available, the FAA said.

There are a number of sightseeing helicopter companies in the Pigeon Forge area, which is near Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
