The New Hampshire Union Leader newspaper says it regrets endorsing New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in the New Hampshire primary after learning of Christie’s decision to back former rival Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination.

“Boy, were we wrong,” wrote the paper’s publisher, Joseph McQuaid, in an op-ed titled, “Christie was our bad choice.”

“We endorsed Chris Christie in the New Hampshire presidential primary … Watching Christie kiss the Donald’s ring this weekend – and make excuses for the man Christie himself had said was unfit for the presidency – demonstrated how wrong we were,” he wrote. “Rather than standing up to the bully, Christie bent his knee. In doing so, he rejected the very principles of his campaign that attracted our support.”

And the Union Leader publisher accused Christie of explicitly reneging on a campaign promise made in the run-up to the New Hampshire primary.

“Despite specifically telling us that he would never endorse him, Christie is backing Trump,” McQuaid wrote. “If nothing else, that might wake up some Trump fans.”

“We will look for that, just as soon as we get the egg off our face,” he wrote.
