
Before the release of her debut album, Madonna sits in her apartment on the Lower East Side of New York in 1983.

On the rooftop of Madonna's apartment. "One of my favorite pictures," photographer Richard Corman said. "She was as inspired by the kids as they were by her."

"She is in her glory," Corman said, looking back at the scene on her rooftop. "It was joyful. It was fun. And it's uncontrived."

"I don't think she's ever been more beautiful," Corman said.

Outside the American Nursing Home on the Lower East Side. "They looked at her like she was an alien they had never seen before."

"Look at that makeup," Corman said. "She did it all. There was nobody there primping. ... It could not have been any better."

Madonna stops in front of a bodega on the Lower East Side.

"She was such a badass," Corman said. "This was a lot of attitude. It's sexy; it's vibrant."

Madonna as the title character for a "Cinderella" remake that was never produced. "She would have been great," Corman said.

"She had a great sense of humor about herself, and only Madonna could pull this off."

"At this point, she's not engaged with the kids," Corman said. "She's engaged with the lens. She's giving me her attitude."
