2016 presidential debate calendar set

Washington (CNN)Dayton, St. Louis and Las Vegas will each host presidential debates ahead of the 2016 general election.

The non-partisan Commission on Presidential Debates on Wednesday announced the dates and sites for the three debates, as well as one that will pit the Democratic and Republican vice presidential candidates against each other.
The first is Monday, Sept. 26 at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, followed by debates on Oct. 9 at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and Oct. 19 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The vice presidential debate is scheduled for Oct. 4 at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia.
In case there are problems with those sites, Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, will serve as the backup site, the commission said.
"We appreciate the many applications we received and are delighted with the sites we have selected," commission co-chairs Frank Fahrenkopf and Mike McCurry said in a statement announcing the dates. "We look forward to working with these fine universities and their students and communities to bring these important civic events to the nation."
