The nearly one-ton female with dark skin that has a purplish hue was a member of the beaked whale family, of which there are several species in the north Atlantic.

"The best way to describe it, it looked like a dolphin," Plymouth harbormaster Chad Hunter said. "But much bigger."

Because of the one-ton whale's size and weight, natural resources officers had to wait until high tide Friday evening to remove the carcass from the rocks.
