Rainbow flag creator Gilbert Baker marches during the 2015 San Francisco Pride Parade. Baker says he wept when the Supreme Court announced its decision making same-sex marriage legal nationwide.

Baker says he was overwhelmed when he saw the White House lit up like a rainbow after the ruling. He thought: "I don't have to worry about making the rainbow flag a success anymore."

Nearly 30 million people, including celebrities like Russell Simmons and Arnold Schwarzenegger, updated their Facebook profiles in the colors of the rainbow.

The Empire State Building was among the many iconic buildings that were lit in rainbow colors in celebration. "I've been a little bit flabbergasted," Baker says.

Many companies, including Whole Foods, AT&T and Coke, celebrated the Supreme Court decision by turning logos into rainbows.

"The rainbow flag is beautiful because it's about love," Baker says. "We needed something to express our joy, our beauty, our power."

Baker says the rainbow flag has stood the test of time. "We're an ancient, wonderful tribe of people," he says. "We picked something beautiful."
