Washington (CNN)Beau Biden's death stunned Delaware politicians who didn't realize how grave his illness was, Gov. Jack Markell said Sunday.
Delaware governor calls Beau Biden's death an 'unbelievable loss'
"I just frankly had no idea that this would happen," he said.
Biden, the son of Vice President Joe Biden, died Saturday night after a long battle with brain cancer. He had served as the Delaware attorney general and was an Iraq war veteran.
It's an "unbelievable loss," the Delaware's governor said on CNN's "State of the Union."
He called Biden "an incredibly good, real, genuine guy" with a bright political future.
"He was the most popular politician in the state and he earned that, and he worked for it. It's just an unbelievable loss," Markell said.
The governor said Biden's death was a particularly tough blow because "everyone in Delaware is close to the Biden family."
He said he'd last spoken with Beau Biden in February to invite him to Washington to meet with national Democrats ahead of a possible run to replace Markell.
"We all expected that Beau was going to run for governor next year, and if he had run he would have won and he would have served very capably," Markell said.
