Africa’s mobile web revolution
Most people in Africa access the internet through a mobile phone, which has enabled a host of apps to offer mobile-based services from banking to farming.

BRCK is a portable router that provides web access in disconnected areas. It seamlessly switches between ethernet, wi-fi and cellular networks to provide internet access for up to 20 devices. The router, which was developed by software engineers in Nairobi, Kenya, works for more than eight hours without electricity.

HarassMap —
HarassMap aims to end the social acceptability of sexual harassment in Egypt. Women use its SMS-based system to to report incidents anonymously, and outreach teams visit the sexual harassment hotspots to raise awareness. The group also uses mobile phones to provide victims with details of how to access services.
