Samantha Hess, the organizer of the first ever cuddling convention, demonstrates a series of platonic cuddling positions. For this position, one person lies on their side with knees slightly bent while the other rests their head on the other's knees. Courtesy Kelly McLain
Hess says this position provides a sense of security and protection. One person sits sideways on a couch with their legs apart while the other sits inside the space created. Courtesy Kelly McLain

This position stretches your back while cuddling. You can have your cuddling partner read to you while you rub their feet, she says. Courtesy Kelly McLain
Hess writes in her book "Touch" that this has to be one of the most comfortable positions. Two people lie sideways and back-to-back. It provides a sense of closeness without the discomfort of intertwining limbs, says Hess. Courtesy Kelly McLain

A hybrid of the classic "spooning" method, this position allows for room to touch and talk. To recreate the position, start with a basic spoon and then bend legs as though riding a bike, intertwining arms and legs. Courtesy Kelly McLain
This position is for people to know that they are not alone, says Hess. It starts when two people lie down and face each other. Then both people embrace with one person resting a cheek on the other's shoulder. Courtesy Kelly McLain
