Muhammad Ali is seen outside a Miami steakhouse in 1972. Photographer Danny Lyon spent three days with the boxer for an assignment that year.

Ali horses around with a child on a street corner in Miami Beach, Florida. He was in town to train for his second fight against Jerry Quarry.

Ali trains for the Quarry fight. Five years earlier, he had been stripped of his boxing titles for refusing to enter the U.S. armed forces.

"There was not a mark on (Ali's) face, by the way," Lyon recalled. "I mean, he had a face like a baby, this guy. There wasn't a cut or nothing on it."

Ali cools down after running at dawn. In the car is Bundini Brown, his longtime friend and cornerman.

"There was an amazing kind of humility to this guy," Lyon said. "I can't quite explain it."
