5 things to know for your New Day -- Thursday, January 8, 2015
It's Thursday and here are the 5 things to know for your New Day
Manhunt: Heavily armed French police are fanned out across the country, hunting for two men who carried out Europe's deadliest terror attack in more than three years. The gunmen barged into the Paris offices of satirical newspaper Charlie Hedbo yesterday and executed 12 people. The attack also wounded 11. The main suspects are brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi.
Artists around the world are paying tribute to the victims of Wednesday's attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
It's so cold: Pretty much everyone in the eastern two-thirds of the country is shivering under sub-freezing and sometimes sub-zero temperatures this morning. From the Canadian border to Central Florida, millions are in the deep freeze. Classes are being delayed and even called off in some areas so kids don't freeze in place while waiting for the school bus. Temperatures are up to 30 degrees below normal in some areas with wind chills down to 45 below. Yikes!
To his defense: Phylicia Rashad, who played Cosby's TV wife Clair Huxtable on NBC's "The Cosby Show," told Showbiz 411 that she never saw any indication of the behavior that many women have attributed to the legendary actor. More than 20 women have come forward with claims of sexual harassment. He's been accused of harassing, drugging and sexually assaulting multiple women. No charges have ever been filed against Cosby and his attorneys have denied the allegations.
JAMEIS WINSTON ACCUSER
Stifled?: The woman who accused Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston of raping her in 2012 has filed a lawsuit against FSU, alleging the school violated her rights under Title IX. Title IX requires schools to investigate allegations of sexual assault, even if criminal charges are not filed. She alleges the school "in concert with Tallahassee Police, took steps to ensure that Winston's rape of plaintiff would not be investigated either by the university or law enforcement." Florida State President John Thrasher said in a written statement that the university never shirked its responsibilities. He called the lawsuit without merit.
