CNN  —

Two high-profile Republicans blasted President Barack Obama’s net neutrality proposals on Monday.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urged the Federal Communications Commission to dismiss the president’s plan, saying it favors “more heavy-handed regulation that will stifle innovation.”

“The Commission would be wise to reject it,” the Kentucky Republican, who’s widely expected to become the next Senate majority leader, said in a written statement.

Obama announced a series of proposals that he argues would keep the Internet open and free. But in order to ensure the success of his plan, it would require adding regulations that Republicans don’t want.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, argued the net neutrality is the same as “Obamacare for the Internet.”

He argued that more regulations could let the government control the prices, terms of services, and types of products for consumers.

“The Internet should not operate at the speed of government,” he said on Facebook.
