Former Ohio Congressman James Traficant is in “very critical condition” after he was injured in an accident on his farm in Greenford, Ohio, his wife and police said Wednesday.
He was riding a small 1943 tractor when he “somehow lost control,” Goshen Police Chief Steve McDaniel said, causing the tractor to roll on top of him.
The accident occurred just after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening. Police and paramedics arrived on the scene to find Traficant trapped under his tractor.
He was driving into a large garage on his farm when he hit a steel plowblade, causing the tractor to overturn, officials said.
McDaniel said that when Traficant was rushed to the hospital, he was in serious condition. He was later flown by a medical helicopter to another hospital in Youngstown. His wife, Patricia, said he is in “very critical condition,” according to CNN affiliate WKBN.
Traficant, 73, represented Ohio for nearly 20 years in the House of Representatives. He was convicted of bribery while in office and served seven years in prison. After his release in 2009, he ran for his old House seat but lost to current Rep. Tim Ryan.
Since then, Traficant has spent a lot of time on his farm.
