A South African company is repurposing oil cans to create fully-functional electric guitars. Darren Wertheim
Called Township Guitars, the eye-catching six-strings come in different designs, with some covered in the colors of the South African flag. Darren Wertheim
The company produces three basic models: "Township," consisting of a single coil pick up, "Township Pro," with double coil pick ups, and "Township Pro Humbucker," same as "Township" with a humbucker. Darren Wertheim
Dani Ngwenya is the company's chief quality controller, fine tuning every instrument it makes. "The whole idea comes from the traditional kind of thinking," he says. Darren Wertheim
"When we were kids we couldn't afford to buy a guitar so we used to make our own guitars, with a can used as an acoustic kind of body -- but these are just purely electric," adds Ngwenya. Darren Wertheim
The company sells its guitars online and from the small shop it has inside Cape Town's popular Waterfront Craft Market. Darren Wertheim
