In season two, Dexter went to great lengths to track down Santos Jimenez, the man hired to kill Dexter's mother. She was a confidential informant, and lover, to Harry Morgan, Dexter's adoptive father. Dexter, as a toddler, was present at the murder and it was one of his earliest memories, and the event that triggered his dark side.

Lila West was a lot of things to Dexter -- Narcotics Anonymous sponsor, lover, confidante, attempted murderer; at one point he considers that she might be someone who truly understands him. After she killed Sgt. James Doakes, and later kidnapped Dexter's step-kids and tried to kill them, herself and Dexter -- it was clear she had to die.

Oscar Prado is killed by Dexter in self-defense, but contrary to the code he uses to choose his kills. Add in the fact that he was the brother of District Attorney Miguel Prado, and this single kill sets the path of the third season.

Dexter's attempts at friendship rarely end well, and Miguel Prado is no exception. After Prado kills an innocent, fellow attorney and rival, Ellen Wolf, and Dexter realizes that he was planning to kill Lt. Maria LaGuerta, it's clear to Dex that he's uncontrollable and he puts him down.

Jorge Orozco, aka George Washington King aka The Skinner, was tracking Dexter in order to find one of Dexter's other targets who owed him money, and killing pretty much anyone who got in his way. Orozco abducts Dexter, and is planning to torture him, but Dex manages to escape and kill Orozco.

Arthur Mitchell was on Dexter's kill list due to the fact that as The Trinity killer he'd done in over 100 innocent people as the most prolific serial killer in the U.S. Dexter spent a long time studying this victim, even keeping him from committing suicide at one point, before taking him out. After he finally killed Mitchell, he arrived home to find that Trinity's final victim was Dexter's wife -- leaving their son, Harrison, crying in a pool of her blood. The scene is reminiscent of Dexter's own memories of his mother's brutal death, bringing a gory end to season four.

Motivational speaker Jordan Chase was the mastermind behind the serial killer gang that had tortured and raped Lumen. After Dex and Lumen track down and kill the rest of his buddies, he lures Lumen into a trap. Dexter manages to find them and again saves the day. He then allows Lumen the final victory of driving a knife into Jordan's chest. This cathartic event freed Lumen of her burden, allowing her to go on with her life elsewhere, and making her one of the few living people that know his secret.

Season six sees Dexter going down the rabbit hole tracing the Doomsday Killer. He at first befriends Travis Marshall, thinking Professor James Geller to be Doomsday. He later learns that Marshall has killed Geller, and is in fact the real Doomsday killer. He finally brings Marshall to justice -- plunging a sword into his chest, just as his sister, Debra walks in seeing the kill. At the beginning of season seven, we see Dexter convince Deb that he was surprised by Marshall while collecting evidence and killed him on impulse, but she later discovers the truth and he comes clean.

Ray Speltzer was chosen by Dexter to show Debra that his cause was a just one, getting rid of criminals that the police could never bring to justice. Dexter finally catches him unaware, subdues and kills him.

Dexter had lured Captain Maria LaGuerta to the spot where he killed Estrada, planning to make it look like they killed each other. LaGuerta was sure that Dexter was a killer, so she had to go, code or no. But before he could finish her off, his sister Debra shows up and shoots LaGuerta to save her brother in the season seven finale. So while Dexter didn't kill her himself, he was largely responsible for her death, and for making Deb a murderer.
