Namibia, 'land of the brave' – Namibia gained independence in 1990, but still faces numerous challenges including unemployment around 50% and some of the highest income inequality in the world.
Long road to independence – Sam Nujoma became the first president of an independent Namibia. He was head of the South West Africa People's Organization (Swapo) that fought against the apartheid rule of South Africa for 22 years during the guerilla war of independence.
Reminders of a grisly past – Germany colonized the country in 1884 until after the First World War. In 2004 it offered a formal apology for the massacre of around 65,000 Herero tribes people who sustained a rebellion between 1904 and 1907 before they were forced into the desert where many perished. In 2011 skulls of Herero and Nama people were returned to Namibia after a ceremony in Berlin.
