Thirteen debutantes attended the first ball in Shanghai from a number of countries including Britain, Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Guest Ricky Gong, a beauty contest organizer, said the ball was "elegant, noble and very ceremonial. It had a very strong upper-class feeling." From the Shanghai International Debutante Ball
