Using the hashtag #cnnmobilesociety, we asked Facebook and Twitter users how mobile phones have changed lives in Africa. The Kenyan money service M-Pesa was a popular response. The M stands for mobile while Pesa means money in Swahili. The service enables users to transfer money quickly using text messaging.
Others talked about how mobile phones have brought a better quality of life and improved the standards of living.
While others pointed out that people in remote areas are more connected thanks to mobile phones.
The rise in the use of mobile phones has also brought opportunities for employment and new businesses.
