The characters on "The Vampire Diaries" got all dolled up to attend a ball at vampire Klaus' (Joseph Morgan) house last season. "We wanted it to have a Cinderella feel to it," costume designer Leigh Leverett said. Candice Accola's character Caroline, far left, donned an Alberto Makali dress, while Nina Dobrev's Elena, fourth from the right, wore a vintage black and gold ball gown. As for vampire Rebekah, played by Claire Holt, third from the left, "This was the first dress she tried on. ... Rebekah has been around for 1,000 years ... her look is a little more sophisticated than our Mystic Falls girls." Courtesy The CW Network, LLC. All rights reserved.
Vampire brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley), left, and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) "just want to blend in with regular people, so they wear what is considered contemporary for whatever time period they are in," Leverett said. Stefan's leather jacket is Hugo Boss and Damon's is John Varvatos, "which hold up really well in a supernatural fight," she jokes. Courtesy The CW Network, LLC. All rights reserved.
Accola's character, Caroline, left, was recently turned into a vampire, but she's still "a cheerleader and head of every event-planning committee at school," Leverett said. "Even though she might be a blood-sucking supernatural creature, she's still a teenager at heart who wants to look cute while she's battling hybrids or the occasional vampire-hating history teacher." Dobrev plays centuries-old vampire Katherine, pictured, as well as her human doppelganger Elena. Leverett makes it easy for viewers to differentiate between the characters by dressing Katherine in edgier styles. "I like to think that Katherine saw those tan Michael Kors heels on some unsuspecting Chicago socialite and probably just compelled her to hand them over," the costume designer said. For Mystic Falls High School's annual Decade Dances, Leverett said she dresses the human students like "a teenager would interpret the period." Though Tyler (Michael Trevino) and Caroline (Accola) are supernatural beings -- he's a hybrid vampire-werewolf and she's a vampire -- they're fairly new to being undead. They didn't live through the '20s like many of the other vampires in town. "Even though they are more challenging than the contemporary clothes, I enjoy doing the flashbacks most of all," Leverett said. This scene takes place at a funeral for one of Stefan and Damon's relatives in 1912. "Since we're dealing with vampires and werewolves," Leverett said, "we go for the coolest, sexiest look that we can get away with for the period. ... We take a little license here and there, (but) everything is still grounded in the reality of whatever time period we are doing." Courtesy The CW Network, LLC. All rights reserved.
Dr. Meredith Fell (Torrey DeVitto) and Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis) are two of the few adults on the series. Despite developing split personalities last season, Alaric's "wardrobe stayed pretty much the same," Leverett said. Meanwhile, she said, Meredith is "a no-nonsense kind of gal and we like to keep her wardrobe simple but pretty." Courtesy The CW Network, LLC. All rights reserved.
