‘American Horror Story,’ ‘Mad Men’ lead Emmy nominations

FX Network’s “American Horror Story” and AMC’s “Mad Men” landed the most Primetime Emmy Award nominations, with 17 apiece. “Downton Abbey,” from PBS had 16 nods.

Thirteen shows received 11 or more nominations.

The nominations were announced Thursday by actress Kerry Washington and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, who stepped in at the last moment to substitute for “Parks and Recreation” star Nick Offerman, who couldn’t make it because of bad weather.

HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” which was the biggest winner last year with eight Emmy wins, garnered 12 nominations.

Last year’s winners for Outstanding Comedy and Outstanding Drama – “Modern Family” and “Mad Men,” respectively – are once again nominees in those categories.

“Downton Abbey” won for Outstanding Miniseries or Movie last year but this year was nominated in the drama category.

HBO had a strong presence in the comedy series category, with three of its shows nominated: “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Girls” and “Veep.” The other nominees for comedy series were “30 Rock” and “The Big Bang Theory.”

The rest of the nominees for drama series were “Breaking Bad,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “Homeland” and “Game of Thrones.”

HBO led all outlets with 81 total nominations. For the major networks, CBS had the most nominations with 60, while ABC had 48, NBC had 51, and Fox had 26.

There were many familiar names among the actors and actresses nominated, including Steve Buscemi, Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey and Claire Danes.

First-time nominees include Mayim Bialik, Hugh Bonneville and Zooey Deschanel.

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards will be September 23 on ABC, with Kimmel as host.
