City rep. works to clear Tran's truancy

An unusual case out of Houston, Texas is catching the nation’s attention. It involves Diane Tran, a 17-year-old girl who was thrown in jail for truancy after missing 18 days of school this year.

But what makes Tran’s case unusual is she hass essentially been abandoned by her parents, and she missed school to work two jobs to support herself and help her two other siblings.

Texas law says when students miss more than 10 days in six months, they must face a judge.

On top of this, she’s an honors student. With her story now public, there’s a big push to clear her record and get her help.

One person leading that charge is Al Hoang, a councilman in Houston.
