Yes, jobs are being created. No, not enough of them

It’s a presidential race framed as a contest between the haves and have-nots. It’s a contest between a president who until eight years ago had student loans, and a challenger who has lived a life of abundance. And a test of which candidate you think will bring jobs and opportunity back to this country.

The latest monthly jobs report gave material for each candidate’s message. Yes, jobs are being created. No, not enough of them.

So the message battle is this: Forward versus Broken Promises.

Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP nominee, has a new web video that claims President Obama broke his promises on jobs and the economy. His points resonate with those who feel like they have lost ground over the past four years. Median household income has declined by $4,300, unemployment has been above 8 percent for a record breaking 39 straight months now, and nearly 23 million Americans are unemployed, underemployed, or have stopped looking for work.

The president’s message is that the jobs market is slowly healing. “Despite adverse shocks that have created headwinds for economic growth the economy has added private sector jobs for 26 straight months, for a total of 4.25 million payroll jobs over that period.”

All those claims are correct, but the candidate who wins the message will win the election.
