Editor’s Note: Part of the CNN Republican debate fact-checking series

(CNN) —

Rep. Ron Paul challenged Sen. Rick Santorum’s voting record on raising the federal government’s debt limit during the Republican debate Saturday night in Manchester, New Hampshire.

The statement: “He’s a big government, big spending individual because, you know, he preached to the fact he wanted a balanced budget amendment, but voted to raise the debt five times.” – Ron Paul.

The facts: As a member of the U.S. Senate from 1995-2007, Santorum voted six times for permanent increases in the debt limit, according to the Congressional Research Service, a research arm of the U.S. Congress.

The verdict: True
