(CNN) -- A convicted murderer was fatally shot when he tried to escape from a Washington state prison in a forklift, officials said.

Kevin Newland, 25, drove the forklift through the doors of a work area and into the perimeter fences at the Clallam Bay Corrections Center on Wednesday, the Washington Department of Corrections said.

A correctional officer fired a shot at Newland, killing him, the department said.

Newland was serving a 45-year sentence for first-degree murder.

At the same time that Newland was trying to escape, another inmate -- Dominick Maldonado -- used a pair of scissors to take an officer hostage, the department said. That officer was treated for minor injuries.

The corrections center houses 858 inmates.
