Clinton became the first U.S. secretary of state to visit Myanmar in 50 years. She met with new President Thein Sein as well as Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

During her trip, Clinton said that the United States will help Myanmar economically and diplomatically if reforms there continue.

Myanmar has long been criticized for its hostility toward democracy and its record on human rights. Clinton’s trip is an indication that Myanmar has made some progress toward democracy and that the time could be right to forge a new relationship between the nations, the White House said.
