Landfill solar farm
A landfill site on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia has covered 10 acres of land with plastic solar panels.
The site now produces one megawatt of electricity which is helping power local homes.
The liner made of thermoplastic polyurethane is similar to that used on commercial rooftops and is designed to keep water out and methane gas in
Gas pumpsdriven deep underground also collect the build of methane gas under the plastic cover.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency there are around 100,000 closed landfills in the U.S. - land which could also be used for renewable energy.
