Suspected militants killed eight Pakistani soldiers Monday during a search operation in the country's tribal region, a government official said.
More than 30 suspected militants were involved in the attack, which occurred in the Aka Khel area of Khyber Agency, according to Rehan Gul, a senior government official in the region.
Security forces returned fire during the roughly 40-minute gunbattle, killing six of the attackers, Gul said.
Khyber Agency is one of seven districts in Pakistan's volatile tribal region bordering Afghanistan.
