NEW: The item was found to be a sewer cleaner nozzle

NEW: Police say it was being used for work in the area

It was found near the Capitol reflecting pool

Washington CNN  —

A suspicious object found Thursday near the reflecting pool at the U.S. Capitol was determined to be a sewer cleaning nozzle, police and the FBI said.

The object was initially thought to be a pipe with wires and caps. It was loaded into a bomb squad truck and taken to FBI headquarters in Quantico, Virginia, because authorities were having trouble X-raying it, said FBI spokeswoman Lindsay Godwin.

It was determined to be a sewer nozzle cleaner, Godwin said. The nozzle was being used for work in the area, said U.S. Capitol police spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Schneider.

The area was closed after the item was found and reopened after the scene was cleared.
