(CNN) -- CNN released its news app for the iPad on Tuesday, promising what execs say will be an "immersive and visual news experience."

The app, which is free, is now available at Apple's iPad app store and through iTunes. CNN's popular iPhone app, which previously sold for $1.99, is also now free, according to a news release.

"High-quality, world-class journalism is what CNN does best, whether live breaking news, hard-hitting interviews or in-depth investigations, and our iPad app presents that content to the world in a wholly new way," KC Estenson,'s senior vice president and general manager, said Tuesday in the release.

"This app harnesses the best of what the iPad offers by leveraging striking photos and videos; elegant, multi-touch navigation; and the ability to share content with your friends via social media."

The iPad app is designed to combine strong visual elements with text stories, blog posts, photo galleries, and live or on-demand video collected from throughout the news network.

Users will be able to toggle between U.S. and international versions and, in the U.S. version, listen to hourly updates from CNN Radio.

It offers three viewing options on the tablet computer's 9.7-inch screen: the default "broadsheet," a simplified "list" view and a visual slide show.

The app also emphasizes user participation, with a prominent comments feature and the ability to share stories, videos and images from the app via e-mail, Facebook and Twitter.

"One of the things about the app that excites us most is the ability to serve the news needs of iPad users while also exposing them to original, enterprise content from CNN that will surprise and delight them," said Louis Gump, vice president of CNN Mobile.

The CNN iPhone app was released in September 2009. At the time, social media blog Mashable (a CNN content partner) called the app "nothing short of impressive."

"To say we're impressed with this app is an understatement," wrote Mashable's Ben Parr. "CNN went all-out with features and functionality, but did it in a way that's simple and easy to use and consume."
