John W. Dean, former White House counsel in the Nixon administration, encouraged a Senate committee Friday to pass a resolution proposed by Russ Feingold, D-Wisconsin, to censure President Bush over a program of wiretaps without judicial warrants.

CNN's Jack Cafferty asked viewers of the "Situation Room" what it means when a former Nixon aide calls for censure of the president. Here is a selection of their responses, sent in by e-mail:

I'm not at all surprised at the irony of some GOP members of Congress who argue forcefully about the rule of law when it comes to illegal immigration, but are perfectly willing to grant "amnesty" to President Bush when he breaks the law with an illegal wiretapping program.
Scott, Kyle, Texas

Sen. Feingold's resolution to censure Bush is the most reasonable idea on the table so far to start the process of restoring checks and balances to our government. ... What some of these politicians seem to forget is that we are all watching you, from the Terri Schiavo outrage, to this unwillingness to hold anyone accountable for their actions. November can't come soon enough.
Marge, Huntington, New York

It means absolutely nothing when a convicted felon, pushing his latest book, and looking for absolution from his new friends from the press and Democrat Party calls for censure of the President.
David, Thousand Oaks, California

Of course censure is appropriate. Indeed, in itself it is merely a slap on the wrist. The FISA law is not vaguely written and subject to interpretation. The warrant requirement is clear. Bush chose to ignore this and in so doing broke the law -- consciously and knowingly.
Gavin, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Bush should be censured, but that would be too straightforward for Congress.
Johanna, Ohio

Congress should have taken action to censure or otherwise check presidential power before it made him a folk hero. Congress is finding courage now because members are afraid of losing their seats. Dean's comments have little weight.
Melvin Lansing, Kansas

Censure is a start. Impeachment, removal and prosecution is a better idea.
Keith, Tallahassee, Florida

For several years now I feel that we have been dragged kicking and screaming back to the '60s. An unpopular war, the administration blaming it all on the media, the President flirting with illegal activity and so forth.
Martha, Rew, Pennsylvania
