KHAZAR, Northern Iraq (CNN) -- Kurdish forces took control of the northern Iraqi town of Khazar on Friday after more than a day's battle with Iraqi troops, CNN's Jane Arraf reported.

The Kurdish forces, who are known as Peshmerga, were aided by U.S. artillery and target information, but the Iraqis fired back with artillery and mortars but withdrew from the town after several hours of U.S. bombing.

When the Peshmerga entered the town about 30 kilometers from Mosul, some tore up posters of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein that adorned a military checkpoint.

Items, including gas masks, lay on the road next to an Iraqi truck-mounted artillery carrier, one of the vehicles in flames after being bombed.

Other burning Iraqi military vehicles included a truck with the bodies of three Iraqi soldiers inside.

EDITOR'S NOTE: CNN's policy is to not report information that puts operational security at risk.
