KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A bicycle carried a bomb that exploded in the main square of the southern Afghanistan city of Kandahar, wounding at least 15 people, police in the city say.

Journalist Ruhullah Khapalwak told CNN that sources at the hospital said even more were hurt in the explosion.

They said 18 people had been admitted with seven were in serious condition. Among the seven were two who were critically wounded and taken to the U.S. Army hospital at the Kandahar airport.

Kandahar Police Chief Mohammad Hashma said there no deaths reported in the afternoon blast.

Hashma and Deputy Chief Mohammad Salim said police and U.S. troops were investigating, but no arrests had been made.

The blast damaged several shops in the square, breaking windows and crumbling walls.

Kandahar is a former stronghold of the Taliban regime, which was toppled by U.S.-led forces in late 2001.

Two U.S. soldiers were wounded Wednesday in Kandahar when a suspected Taliban militant threw a grenade at a U.S. military vehicle.
