Lawyer: Ryder's arrest a 'misunderstanding'

BEVERLY HILLS, California (CNN) -- Winona Ryder's arrest for alleged shoplifting at Saks Fifth Avenue is "all a misunderstanding," the actress' lawyer said Thursday.

"Once they get all of the facts they will see that she did not take anything," attorney Mark Geragos said.

The 30-year-old actress was arrested at the store Wednesday night and booked on charges of grand theft and possessing pharmaceutical drugs without a prescription.

The charges are felonies and Ryder could face prison time, said Beverly Hills police Lt. Gary Gilmond.

Gilmond said security officers saw Ryder remove security tags from items, place them in a bag, and then leave the store without paying. The items included women's clothes and hair accessories worth about $4,760, he said.

Geragos said Ryder purchased the items in different departments of the store and had receipts for everything in her bag. He said Ryder was in lawful possession of prescription pain medication.

The Oscar-nominated actress, star of "Girl, Interrupted," "Reality Bites" and "Little Women," was taken into custody, booked and then released at 11:40 p.m. Wednesday after posting $20,000 bail.

Gilmond said security officers described Ryder as "very friendly, very polite, very cooperative" as she was taken into custody. She is scheduled to appear in court January 11 for arraignment
