Macster wins Napster's official endorsement

InfoWorld

(IDG) -- After months of music file-sharing company Napster suggesting that users download the Macster clone while waiting for an official Napster client for the Macintosh, the program has finally arrived, and it is -- Macster.

Macster, Blackhole Media's Napster clone for Apple's Macintosh operating system, has become the official version of "Napster for the Mac," according to a message on the Web sites of both companies.

Mac users needn't worry that the transition will cause the program to look like a PC program though.

"This doesn't mean we're going to sacrifice the Mac Interface. ... We're not going to try to copy the interface from the Windows version. Instead we're going to keep Napster for the Mac looking and acting like a Mac program should," according to a message on Macster's Web site.

Macster's "official" status will also ensure that Napster for the Mac will stay up to date, closing the gap between the number of functions available for it, compared to its older sibling, the PC version. The move will also bring Mac users greater support, Macster said on its Web site.

The creation of Napster for the Mac shows that San Mateo, Calif.-based Napster is continuing to grow, despite its notorious legal problems. Napster and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) have been engaged in an ongoing legal battle over copyright infringement. An appeals court earlier this month stayed an injunction that would have forced Napster to shut down pending its upcoming copyright infringement trial.
