Clinton, Lazio split over baseball's 'subway series'

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Already divided over numerous issues ranging from the Middle East to dairy supports upstate, U.S. Senate candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Rick Lazio have now split over the all-New York World Series between the Yankees and the Mets.

The best-of-seven championships open Saturday night, the first time two New York teams have met in the World Series since the Yankees and the then-Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956.

The first lady, a newcomer to the state running as a Democrat in her first bid for public office, professes to be a lifelong New York Yankees fan. Lazio, a four-term Republican congressman from Long Island, is a Mets fan, according to New York magazine political writer Michael Tomasky.

"A year after I move to the state we have a subway series. That's pretty exciting," Mrs. Clinton said Wednesday. "I just want everybody to enjoy the series."
