The 2014 rallies brought parts of the city to a standstill demanding fully free leadership elections and other democratic reforms for semi-autonomous Hong Kong. Those demands were snubbed by Beijing, but since then former protesters have gained seats as lawmakers -- some are now pushing for a complete break from China.
