Little Elm Police Detective Jerry Walker died from injuries sustained in a fire fight with an armed man barricaded inside a residence, Little Elm Police Chief Rodney Harrison said at a press conference Tuesday night.

Walker was with a group of Little Elm police officers responding to a call a call of an armed man in a backyard of residence, Harrison said. The unnamed suspect, armed with a long gun, ran into the residence, and after a period of time talking with officers, began firing his weapon either through a door or window. Walker was struck, placed in a squad car, and transported by helicopter to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to Harrison.

The scene is still active and police say the suspect is still barricaded inside the residence. Harrison said officers from the Little Elm police department, SWAT team and Denton County Sheriffs Office are still at the home and were able to extract an elderly female relative from a window. Officers exchanged fire with the suspect, but his condition is unknown at this time, according to Harrison.

Detective Walker was a father of 4, and served with the Little Elm Police Department since 1998. Tonight the Town of Little Elm lost a hero, read a statement on the towns Facebook page.
