Fatal shooting sparks protests in North Carolina

When University of North Carolina at Charlotte student journalist Pooja Pasupula heard about the protests happening a short distance away, she stopped studying and headed over to cover the scene for the schools weekly paper. She only stayed for 30 minutes on Tuesday night, as when the tear gas came out, she said it was time to go.

People were going up to cops and yelling in their faces, throwing water bottles at them. People were getting really rambunctious, screaming and yelling about the injustice done to them, she told CNN.

The police stood there, but the moved the line closer and closer to protesters, the 19-year-old said. The officers later screamed, move, and Pasupula said she was pushed. Pasupula was there observing and photographing the protest.

They started putting gas masks on. Then they actually started throwing things that sparked and went off, she said. I jumped out of the way. My eyes started burning and I figured, OK its time to go. I started running.
