William J. Hager told St. Lucie County Deputies he shot and killed his wife on Monday morning because she was in poor health and they could no longer afford the medications necessary for her care, according to an arrest affidavit from the St. Lucie County Sheriffís Office.

Hager called 911 after the shooting and upon inviting police into his home, told a deputy that he had shot his wife, Carolyn Hager. The 86-year-old Port St. Lucie resident apologized to police that he didnít call immediately after the incident, telling them he wanted to talk with his daughters about it first. Hager said Carolyn had told him in the past that she wanted to die, but never specifically asked him to kill her.

Hager was arrested on first-degree murder charges and transported to the St. Lucie County Jail for booking.
