Hospital related infections (insert: Enterococcus faecium)

Hospitals are one of the main places superbugs are causing concern, as doctors are running our of viable options for antimicrobials. Leading the way are a group of bugs known as the ESKAPE pathogens, the first of which is Enterococcus faecium.

This bacteria is normally found in the intestines and in the female genital tract, and can sometimes cause infections. In some instances it's become resistant to the vancomycin antibiotic which is used to treat infections caused by the enterococci bacteria. Mostly this occurs in hospitals, potentially infecting the urinary tract, the bloodstream, or wounds from surgical procedures.
