Photographer Patrick Willocq shares a preview of one of his photos with the children and carpenters who helped him create the image, in the Nyarugusu camp for Burundian refugees in Tanzania.

Save the Children commissioned the award-winning artist Patrick Willocq to create a series of images around the theme of âRefugeâ.

Through participatory art and craft workshops with children and their families in refugee camps in Lebanon and Tanzania, Willocq constructed large theatrical sets which draw on the real experiences and perspectives of refugee children.

Adult refugees with expertise in trades and craft used local materials to build the various sets, on which the children then acted out scenes from their lives. The resulting tableaux depict stories of long journeys, hopes for the future, education and child labour.

Willocqâs work is truly collaborative, amalgamating children's own testimonies with the craftsmanship of the adult refugees, thus giving an insight into what life is like as a displaced child in a new and innovative way.
