Sunset offers a variety of creative, editorial, sales, consumer marketing and business opportunities. All positions, unless otherwise indicated, are full-time, Monday through Friday, in Sunset's Menlo Park, California offices.
If you are a current undergraduate or graduate student, then you are eligible to apply for edit and publishing internships at Sunset. Internships are offered on an as-needed basis, with available positions varying each semester. Edit internships are offered in journalism, photo and art/design. Internships are for credit only (unpaid) and students must be able to receive school credit. Positions are based in Menlo Park, California.
Students are welcome to send in a one-page letter indicating an area of interest, along with current resume. We will keep resumes on file, and contact students in the event an appropriate internship develops.
Sunset Magazine, the West's premier lifestyle publication with more than 1.2 million subscribers, is seeking an Executive Editor who will be responsible for developing the content of the print publication. The position reports to the Editor-in-Chief.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop monthly issue lineups to reflect seasonality, service, and innovation for our savvy readers.
• Work with dept editors, features editor, design department, and editor-in-chief to collect and shape ideas into beautiful and compelling story packages.
• Top edit stories to ensure fresh, lively tone and informative content. Write heads/decks and coverlines.
• Directly supervise dept editors, and provide leadership to junior staff members.
• Develop relationships with freelance writers and contributors to ensure Sunset’s leadership position as the authority on Western living.
OCCASIONAL DUTIES
• Appear on television, radio, and public events to represent Sunset on various topics
• Assist editor-in-chief with other duties as needed
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE
• More than 5 years experience in magazine lifestyle journalism
• Knowledge of or direct experience with Western living topics (travel, home/garden, food) and contemporary taste in those subjects
• At least 3 years management experience
