CNN: 25 YEARS ON

For many of us, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  Today, 25 years after
CNN launched on June 1, 1980, there are more than 70 television channels broadcasting 24-hour news coverage around the world – a true testament that CNN changed the world of broadcasting and journalism and opened a window on the most remarkable events of our time.

Where would we be today if networks like CNN had not been there to capture "people power" as the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union collapsed?  What about the real-time images of the 1991 Gulf War?  And none of us can forget the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

By covering events as they are happening, the viewing audience has in many cases become part of the story. When the tsunami struck on Dec. 26, 2004, millions of people - and governments alike – were galvanized into action by the shocking images they witnessed.  Fast-forward six months later and those tragic stories and pictures still serve as reminders of that terrible day of destruction, and millions of dollars in relief efforts continue to pour in.

With the changing times and new technology, CNN is now available not only on television, but also on the Web at CNN.com, on personal pagers and palm pilots and, of course, cell phones.

The fact that CNN is the industry by-word for news is due in part to the dedication, hard work and bravery of CNN's global staff, who together with the more than 900 international broadcast affiliates, ensure that viewers get the latest and most accurate news around the clock.

On this 25th anniversary of the birth of CNN, let us all reflect on the accomplishments we never thought possible with a sense of pride and wonderment, while looking forward to providing outstanding news coverage in the years ahead.
