  • Hurricane Andrew strikes Florida -- August 24, 1992

    Hurricane Andrew slams into South Florida, killing 13 and rendering 250,000 homeless. Thousands of troops deliver food, water and medical supplies to the region, where damage is estimated at $20 billion. The storm crosses the Gulf of Mexico and strikes Louisiana, where one person is killed and damage is less severe.

    Perot goes for the White House -- October 1, 1992

    Apologizing for an earlier decision to leave the race, Texas billionaire Ross Perot says he is reentering the presidential race as an independent candidate. Joined by his running mate, Vietnam veteran Adm. James Stockdale, Perot attributes his change of heart to volunteers around the country urging him to run against the Republican and Democratic candidates.

    Speaking in the House of Commons, British Prime Minister John Major announces that Charles and Diana, the prince and princess of Wales, had "decided to separate."
