    Coca-Cola, facing an increasing challenge from Pepsi-Cola, ditches its hugely successful soft-drink formula. The Coca-Cola Co. locks the top-secret recipe in an Atlanta bank vault, vowing never to use it again. The company claims its new formula is "smoother, rounder, yet bolder," but a national outcry against the new Coke develops. Eventually the company is forced to bring back the old flavor.

    Live Aid raises $70 million for famine relief -- July 13, 1985

    Live Aid, an all-star rock concert to benefit African famine victims, is held July 13 in Philadelphia and London. Irish rock musician Bob Geldof coordinates reunions of The Who and Led Zeppelin and persuades former Beatle Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Elton John and other mega-stars to perform. The all-day music telethon raises an estimated $70 million.

    133 killed in Delta crash in Dallas -- August 2, 1985

    A Delta Airlines Lockheed L-1011 Tristar crashes while approaching a runway at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. The disaster kills 133, including a motorist on the ground, although 30 aboard the plane survive. The survivors are in the tail section that breaks off from the rest of the plane, which explodes after skidding across the airport. The crash is attributed to wind shear.

    Earthquakes devastate Mexico City -- September 19, 1985

    Violent earthquakes jolt Mexico City September 19-20, killing more than 7,000 people. About 3,300 buildings are destroyed or damaged. Damage is later estimated at more than $4.1 billion.
