  • James Griffiths is a senior producer for CNN Digital Worldwide in Hong Kong, covering breaking news, politics and human rights in Asia. At CNN, his reporting has covered Hong Kong's protest movement and the city's transformation under Chinese rule, Beijing's crackdown on speech and online freedoms, as well as terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka, political scandals in Malaysia, and the Korean peace process.

    Prior to joining CNN in 2015, he wrote for publications including The Atlantic, The Daily Beast, South China Morning Post, and GlobalPost, covering Chinese politics, culture and business from Hong Kong and Shanghai.

    Griffiths is the author of "The Great Firewall of China: How to build and control an alternative version of the internet" (2019) and the upcoming "Speak Not: Empire, identity and the politics of language" (2021), both published by Zed Books.

    Originally from North Wales, Griffiths has reported on the ground from China, South Korea, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Australia and Hong Kong since 2012. Prior to moving to Asia, he studied law at the University of Liverpool in the UK.
